MADISON Flandreaus two amateur baseball teams, the Cardinals and the Blue Teal, both earned the right to play in the State Class B Amateur tournament starting Wednesday.
The Class B tourney will be held at First National Bank Field at Aspen Park in Brandon starting August 6 and running through the 17th.
The Cardinals are District 4s representative number 4 and face Parkstons Mudcats in the opening game of the tournament, today, Wednesday, August 6. First pitch is 5:30 p.m.
The Blue Teal are the districts representative 6 and will take on the Clark Traders on Friday, August 8 at 5:30 p.m.
The 32 team tournament is single elimination win and move on or lose and go home.
District play
Recapping the district tourney play, which began on July 25 for both teams, the Cardinals lost to Dell Rapids Mudcats and then defeated Colman and the Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks.
The Blue Teal, who will attend their first state tourney as a two-year old team, defeated Colman, lost to Canova, Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks and Dell Rapids PBR and then defeated the Wood Ducks to claim the final spot representing District 4B.
On their home field, Madisons Broncos won the District title defeating the Mudcats in the championship game, 9-1 Saturday evening.
Cardinals Vs. Wood Ducks
In Thursdays 17-2 defeat over the Wood Ducks, Bret Severtson earned the win throwing five innings. He allowed both runs off four hits and struck out four Wood Ducks. Noel Burgos came in for the final inning of work and gave up two hits.
The Cardinals opened the game with five runs and, also had a big seventh inning putting seven across the plate.
They amassed 13 team hits with Luke Gassman leading the way batting 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. He was also patient at the plate walking twice.
Other Cardinals with two-base hits were JaColby Anderson, Tim Huber and Austin King.
The win put the Cardinals in the state tourney.
Blue Teal Vs. Gamecocks
The Blue Teal found themselves matched up with the H/H Gamecocks on Thursday, but their effort in a 6-run sixth inning comeback wasnt enough and they took the 16-11 loss.
Hits were plentiful as the Blue Teal earned 17 and the Gamecocks 18.
Leading the Teal was Tash Lunday who went 5-for-5 with two home runs, a double and two singles and hit in five RBI. Kolby Peters also took a ball over the fence for three RBI and Mason Riley had a trio of singles.
Tristan Peters was the Blue Teal starter and took the loss. He allowed 12 runs off 13 hits. Sam Gassman and Tristan VanWassenhove also were on the mound.
Blue Teal Vs. PBR
After Thursdays loss, the Blue Teal were matched with Dell Rapids PBR and kept up with last years State B champions through eight innings, but Dells marked up five eighth inning runs to take a commanding 8-1 win.
The game was a low hitting affair. Flandreau had seven hits and PBR, six.
Dane Mediger batted 2-for-4 (singles) to led the Teal. Other one-base hits came from Micah Otto, Mason Riley, Kolby Peters and Tristan Van Wassenhove.
Emmott Nathan was the losing pitcher throwing seven and a third innings. He allowed all eight runs off six hits, walked 13 and struck out 11 PBR batters.
Blue Teal Vs. Wood Ducks
In the battle of the ducks with a state entry on the line, the Flandreau Blue Teal outlasted the H/H Wood Ducks, 5-3 on Saturday.
Tash Lunday pitched the complete game to help give the Blue Teal their first ticket to state.
Lunday struck out seven, walked two and allowed three runs on seven hits.
At the plate, Micah Otto had a two hit game and Emmott Nathan earned an RBI off one hit. From a walk, Dane Mediger also had an RBI. Other singles came from the bats of Mason Riley, Kolby Peters, Lunday and Tristan Peters. The Teal tallied seven team hits as did the Wood Ducks.
