A faster, smarter emergency response

When youre in an emergency situation, theres nothing more terrifying than not being able to communicate clearly especially when your location or the scene is key to getting the help you need.
Traditionally, 9-1-1 operators rely on what callers can verbally provide. But a new AI-powered safety platform, RapidSOS, is making its way into call centers across South Dakota. Officials say the upgrades will give operators, first responders, and callers secure, life-saving data in real-time.
Responders can reportedly receive instant, critical information, including a callers contact details, health profiles, vehicle crash data, alarm alerts even cell phone video.
Being able to receive a callers near real-time location and other information can better inform our Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) during emergency response, Jason Husby, Statewide 9-1-1 Coordinator, stated in a press release.
RapidSOS helps PSAPs respond, dispatch, and allocate resources more efficiently by sharing critical data, strengthening our connection to the communities we serve.
The technology also offers a tool that overlays locally sourced mapping data, like trails, mile markers, fire hydrants, and boat ramps, on top of standard maps, making it easier to locate callers wherever they may be.
Additionally, it provides a backup system in case of outages or disasters, ensuring that even during emergencies that disrupt services, telecommunicators can continue receiving location and contact information and can even reach out to callers directly.
RapidSOS already works with over 22,000 public safety agencies across 11 countries. Its integration into South Dakotas 9-1-1 system is viewed as a major step forward for faster, smarter emergency services.
To make the upgrades even more effective however, youre encouraged to update your emergency health profile through your smartphones Health or Health Connect apps. This information will allow first responders to access your vital medical details if youre unable to communicate.
The health data is said to only be shared during a 9-1-1 call, ensuring security and relevance to the emergency at hand.
