Construction delays, 2026 budget preparation, and new projects

Discussions around upcoming events, next years budgets, and delayed construction projects have been dominating meetings across the county this month.
In Flandreau, the summer has been filled with opportunities for residents to support local organizations and families. Mayor Dan Sutton recently highlighted several successful events that have taken place and others still on the horizon. Sutton expressed his appreciation for the people behind these events and those who continue to turn out year after year, helping them grow and thrive.
Meanwhile, both Flandreau and Colman have faced some challenges with heavy summer rains, which have slightly delayed two major infrastructure and road construction projects. City officials are set to provide updates to residents, with a meeting scheduled for noon on July 16th at the Flandreau City Office regarding the infrastructure project.
Colmans City Council is expected to hear updates on the Highway 34 Construction Project at this weeks regularly scheduled meeting.
At the most recent Flandreau City Council meeting, some key topics were discussed:
While a revised housing development on Broad Avenue remains in the early stages, the Housing Authority Committee is actively seeking funding and a builder. This project is something the city recognizes as much-needed.
Preliminary budgets for 2026 have been presented by department heads and city staff. A key point of focus will be the citys plan to take over the county-operated ambulance service. The first reading of Ordinance 630: City Budget Timeline was introduced, setting a deadline for the city budget to be submitted to the council by the first regular meeting in November, with publication before December 31st.
Theres exciting news on the development front: the first reading of Ordinance 631: Amending Chapter 155.073 was held. This ordinance would allow indoor recreational facilities as a conditional use, paving the way for a new indoor sports complex in town, a topic weve covered before. The second reading is set for July 21st.
City Administrator Cohl Turnquist also took a walk-through of the proposed bike path with members of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe and the Flandreau Development Corporation. Construction is slated to begin in 2026.
Stay tuned for more updates on these important developments in the coming weeks.
