The recent deadly floods in Texas Hill Country have tragically underscored the need for communities everywhere to be fully prepared for the unexpected. As counties across the country, including right here in Moody County, take stock of emergency management plans, the focus is even more on preventing loss of life and minimizing damage during natural disasters.
At the last Moody County Commission meeting, officials discussed how to strengthen emergency management resources and ensure the county meets FEMAs hazard mitigation requirements. Counties are required to regularly assess hazard-related data to identify areas for improvement, particularly in protecting critical infrastructure and safeguarding residents.
For Moody County, this means a close look at floodplains, vital records, and vulnerable infrastructure.
The commission is already focused on making essential upgrades, including rebuilding bridges, improving storm sirens, and ensuring power lines are more resilient to ice damage. They are also considering new resources like storm shelters, including in Trent, Colman, and along the southern edge of Lake Campbell, where campers and others recreating in the Kattails campground area may need additional protection.
The federal requirement to strengthen disaster preparedness is vital to ensuring Moody County remains resilient and ready for whatever challenges lie ahead whether from floods, storms, or other emergencies.
Also discussed during the most recent meeting of the Moody County Commission was a start to this coming years budgetary needs, and news of a raffle to benefit the State of South Dakotas National Guard Unit, the 1742nd Transportation Company. Proceeds will support the units fund, which helps cover state and community events, as well as unit needs throughout the year. Tickets go on sale July 12, 2025, for $20 each, with prizes ranging from a $3,000 travel voucher to firearms, gift cards, and more.
The drawing is set for December 13, 2025.
