Waters rise on the Big Sioux River

While the moisture the region has been receiving has largely been welcomed after years of drought-like conditions especially by farmers others are keeping a wary eye on rising waters along the Big Sioux River and its tributaries.
As of Monday morning, the river near Flandreau, South Dakota, was measured at 9.67 feet, placing it within minor flood stage. The action stage for the river is 8 feet, and minor flooding begins at 9 feet, with the flood stage officially starting at 9.4 feet, according to the National Water Prediction Service.
While there are no immediate watches, warnings, or advisories in effect for the area, more rain is forecast for this week. The region has seen consistent rainfall recently, leading to swelling streams and rivers, and adding to the cautious optimism of farmers grateful for the moisture but mindful of the potential for flooding. Local officials are keeping a close watch on the situation to ensure residents are aware of any changes in conditions.
