VOLGA The Flier girls came in second place at the Brace-Hopfinger Relays on Tuesday, April 15 scoring 129 points.
Host Sioux Valley took both team wins with the girls scoring 145.5 and the boys 134 points.
The Flier boys team came in fifth with 90 points.
Morgan Sheppard led the Flier girls team with four gold medals.
The Fliers took five of the top six positions in the 200 meter dash with Sheppard leading the team with a time of 27.93. She also won the 400 meter dash in 1:02.34.
In the relays, Sheppard joined with Morgan Kontz, Kiley Westberry and Ella Hoffman to win the 4×200 (1:51.68) and also teamed with Westberry, Josie Hamilton and Faith Wiese to win the 4×800 relay (10:07.15).
One of the highlights on the day was in the girls 3200 meter run. Another new Flandreau school record was set by Wiese. She blew by her old time of 11:05.17 and ran a 10:48.86 to easily win her race.
Faith Wiese ran incredibly, destroying her previous 3200 record time by 17 seconds, noted Coach Owen Parsley.
She put in the work during the off-season and you can see the results of her efforts. Her 1st mile was five minutes and 20 seconds. Her 2nd mile was five minutes and 28 seconds, showing the consistency and persistence of her remarkable, God given ability. Im so excited to see what the rest of her season has in store, he added.
Another highlight was Brenton Westberrys 400 meter dash win. He came on strong at the end and edged Hamlins ace runner, Zac VanMeeteren, to win the gold at 50.17. This time is now second all-time fastest for a Flier.
God made Brenton Westberry so fast, said Parsley.
Thanks to sensational training by coach Liam Streitz, Brenton is already having a tremendous season and he is hungry for more. With his speed and guts, Brenton and his coaches are hoping to shatter the Bill Cone 400M record from 71 years ago.
Parsley also noted that over the day, there were 50 personal records set by his boys teams and 28 for the girls indicating that they are starting to get the feel of the track and field season.
As the team leaders attack each practice and push their teammates, they are living out our motto for the season: Iron Sharpens Iron.
