The curtain has closed on another successful season of one-act plays, with the Flandreau High School drama team delivering a series of performances this past weekend for local audiences.
The troupe staged The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon by Don Zolidis, a lighthearted satire of classic Grimms fairy tales. The fast-paced comedy highlighted the absurdities of the original tales while drawing humorous parallels to modern-day life.
Among the 209 stories referenced in the play was a modern twist on Rapunzel. Rather than longing for freedom or waiting for a prince, this Rapunzel was more concerned with finding a cell signal from her tower texting, talking on the phone, and checking social media.
The cast included Claire Wegner, Abe Streitz, Ben Kulm, Marina Tharrats Lopez, Colton Thompson, Hailey Lahr, Justin Haugen, Abby Lewis, Jillian Knippling, Isabel Kulm, Fawn Frias, Louis Gauthier, Amelia Pieper, Miesha Pedraza-Felix, Tillie Haugen, Zuleka Gauthier-Martinez, and Alex Julson. Liam Knippling and Dillyn Opsahl were a big part of the production as well, ensuring smooth operations behind the scenes.
Directed by Flandreau High School Principal and drama instructor Kristi Fisher, the production marked the culmination of months of hard work, memorization, and collaboration.
Last month, the group also performed at the 2025 SDHSAA State One-Act Play Festival in Brookings, where they earned a Superior rating for their performance. Flandreaus Class A Overall Play, The Headless Horseman, also received a Superior rating under the direction of Fisher.
In addition, Abe Streitz, Ben Kulm, Abigail Lewis, and Justin Haugen were each recognized for individual acting performances.
