Federal program shifts could impact local projects, services

Between newly announced tariffs, federal program changes and funding cuts, along with shifts in immigration enforcement, changes are on the horizon for Moody County.
One of the more notable developments is that the Crescent Street Bridge project has been put on hold (story at right). The pause comes as the Environmental Protection Agency defends grant funding awarded to various projects across the country including the bridge replacement in Moody County.
While the projects status is uncertain, it represents a potential loss for the many who advocated for its reconstruction. The bridge effort has been years in the making, built on collaboration between the city, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, the state, and the federal government.
Other programs are also beginning to feel the effects of potential cuts, including those with more immediate, day-to-day implications.
Among them is the partnership between Community Counseling Services and local schools. Late last week, staff learned that Health and Human Services funding which had for years supported student access to mental health services is either on hold or could be eliminated entirely. The grant is part of a Systems of Care Grant. Over time, these resources have become an important part of how schools assist families facing mental health challenges.
