Finding just the right dress or tux for prom isnt easy. Maybe the fit isnt quite right, or the color isnt what you had in mind. For many, the biggest challenge can simply be the price tag.
For students at Flandreau Indian School, all of the above can be factors. Many are far from home with limited resources not just financially, but also in terms of transportation and free time to shop for the perfect outfit.
Thats why the Moody County Boys & Girls Club has stepped up to help ensure FIS students have what they need to feel confident and celebrated on prom night.
Theyre also hoping for the communitys support to make it happen.
We have gotten some slightly used prom dresses for the girls to have new options this year, but we are still looking for suits, said board member Kari Burggraff.
Burggraff said that she was approached after last years prom with the idea of helping FIS students access formalwear, and the Club has been working ever since to build up a collection of donated items. Theyre currently accepting dresses, ties, shirts, suits, and financial contributions to help cover rental costs.
If anyone has items to donate, they can be dropped off at Ramsdells office or the Boys & Girls Club.
We have secured an option to rent suits for the males and are looking for individuals to help sponsor this so that we can let these kids enjoy a memorable prom, Burggraff said.
It is going to cost about $100 to rent a suit per student, and there are approximately 25 to 30 students who will probably need one.
With prom just a month away, organizers are working quickly to secure donations.
The Boys & Girls Club of Moody County has long served students throughout the area, including an active group from FIS. The Club provides daytime and evening support, including academic assistance, and has become a trusted resource for many.
FISs prom will be held on April 19 at a venue to be determined.
Other upcoming proms in the area include Flandreaus on April 5 and Colman-Egans on April 11.
