WAGNER The Flier wrestling team took ninth place out of 18 schools at the Tom Studelska Wrestling Invitational in Wagner finishing with 83.5 team points.
Bon Homme/Avon won the invitational with 191.5 points just edging powerhouse Canton with 187.5. Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall scored 178 and Parkston scored 177.5.
Earlier this week, we talked as a team, knowing this is a very competitive tournament, said Coach Cody Chamblin.
I wanted them to give me all they could and they did just that. Im super proud of them for placing ninth.
Chamblin had four wrestlers place in the top four.
Flier 175 lb. grappler Justin Klein, and 215 lb. Karter Headrick, both earned third place. Teague Bergjord at 120 and Zach Pederson, at 132, earned fourth.
Coach Chamblin was happy with his wrestlers individual performances against some of the best Class B wrestlers in the state, even those who didnt place.
Klein opened with a bye, pinned #6 ranked Kenyon Kuiper of Kimball/White Lake/Plankinton, but then lost in the semi-finals to Class Bs 175 lb. No. 1 ranked Kale Crowser of Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall, by a 21-6 tech fall. In the wrestlebacks, he pinned 11th ranked Caleb Heuertz of Elk Point-Jefferson in 48 seconds and then took a 4-1 decision over fourth ranked Kolter Kramer of Parkston to place third.
This guy knocked off three ranked wrestlers, noted Chamblin. He showed some power with his only loss coming to that number one kid in the state.
Headrick pinned Elliot Powell of Tri-Valley but couldnt get the best of Parkstons No. 3 ranked Gage Jodozi in the semifinals and dropped down to the wrestlebacks. He defeated Sioux Valleys Andrew Gunderson, (15-0 TF) and then won another 15-0 tech fall in his placing match with Cody Sassaman of Bon Homme/Avon.
Chamblin noted that in Headricks 215 pound class, there are about five state wrestlers who could win it all.
Karter is one of them, he said. He needs to keep working on things to finish strong the next couple of weeks.
In the quarterfinals, Bergjord lost to sixth ranked DeVonne Sessler of Bon Homme/Avon, 14-6, dropping him down to wrestlebacks where he won three straight matches before losing 7-1 to Sessler again.
Pederson, moving up a weight class, lost to Keaton Preheim in the semi-finals, then earned a win before being matched with Aidan Schrempp of Canton. The C-Hawk, third ranked, took a second period win.
These two (Bergjord and Pederson) will keep moving forward and are looking forward to conference and region meets, said Chamblin.
Another kid that is really pushing himself and had an awesome day even though coming up short was Tyton Peters, said Chamblin.
He went 2-2 but had probably one of the more talented weight classes on the day. He wrestled the number one kid first round (Hunter Richman, Canton) and had a great match with him. Then he wrestled two other ranked kids with beating one and falling to the other in the last five seconds in overtime. This kid is making strides and expects to see big things the next couple weeks.
This team has so much heart and drive its just fun coaching them, said Chamblin. Well just keep grinding for that trip to Rapid City (State).
This week the Fliers looked to improve on their dual record in a quad with Deuel, Hamlin/Castlewood and Howard at Clear Lake on Tuesday, and then will go for conference honors at the Big East/Lake Central Conference tourney Saturday in Montrose.
Tenley Quick will be wrestling at Yankton this Friday.
Next Thursday, they finish up the quad portion of their schedule at Garretson with Kingsbury County and Tri-Valley also in attendance.
