Boys at Tri-Valley
TRI-VALLEY SCHOOLS Five Flier wrestlers placed at the annual Tri-Valley Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday held in the new Tri-Valley High School complex.
The boys wrestled some of their best matches Ive seen them in this year with a lot of fight and heart and not giving up said Chamblin.
This is a great tournament mixed with some great Class A and B schools.
Flandreau wrestlers faced at least four top Class A matmen during the day and also saw action against some top Class B wrestlers.
The Flier team took eighth scoring 85.5 points. Tea Area won with 224, Winner was second at 216.5, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes took third.
Host Tri-Valley was fourth scoring 179.5 points followed by Bon Homme/Avon with 164, Miller/Highmore-Harrold with 142 and Sioux Falls Jefferson with 105.5.
Team place winners were Karter Headrick in second, Justin Klein tin third, Zach Pederson in fourth and Teague Bergjord and Tyton Peters placed fifth.
Coach Chamblin had this to say about his place winners:
Karter lost to a tough Winner kid that we closed the gap on from the first time we wrestled him. Headrick is going to keep fighting and learning and will peak at the right time.
In the 215 lb. class, Winners Mason Curtis, Class B #5 ranked, defeated Headrick, 6-5 to win the championship.
Klein probably wrestled some of his best matches on the year with most going the distance.
His only loss on the day was to a talented Landyn Reiser of Tri-Valley who only has one loss this year and is rated #2 in Class B.
Pederson is still looking impressive in a highly talented weight class (126) placing fourth on the day.
In the semi-finals, he was matched with Tyler Woodring of Tea who is ranked #1 in Class A.
During the day, Peters and Bergjord placed fifth, but both were looking good and learning from small mistakes.
Bergjord wrestled against two top six state wrestlers: Wilson Slater, fourth in Class A and Owen Bunde, sixth in Class B.
Dalin Billmeier also got a confident booster by recording a tech fall in the wrestle backs. Its nice to see these new kids grow each match.
This Thursday, January 23, the grapplers host their final quad of the season in the Flandreau Elementary Gym when Beresford/Alcester-Hudson, Marion/Freeman and Mount Vernon/Plankinton come to town. First match is 5 p.m. Its also Parent Night and Autograph Night for the Fliers so come and get an autographed poster of the wrestling team.
Friday, Quick will be at a tournament in Pierre and Saturday, the boys team travels to Arlington for the Kingsbury County Tournament.
