Fliers see action in doubleheaders

Flandreau basketball teams competed in a pair of doubleheader games last week.
The teams split with Castlewood on Tuesday night. The Flier girls came away with a 39-34 win, while the boys fell to the Class B top ranked Warriors 56-28.
Friday evening, the teams hosted Tri-Valley in a contest on the Flier court with both varsity teams earning a win. The girls won 46-31 and the boys, 56-26.

Castlewood
Girls
CASTLEWOOD A strong fourth quarter from the Fliers allowed the girls to come away with the 39-34 victory.
Flandreau led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and then took a 16-12 lead into halftime. Castlewood would then cut the lead to 25-24 heading into the fourth but the Fliers outscored the Warriors 14-10 in the final frame.
Flandreau shot 37.5% from the field and was 2-of-10 from three. Morgan Sheppard led the Fliers with 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Sadie Iott had 13 points and two steals.
Castlewood shot 34.3% from the field and was 6-of-16 from beyond the arc. The Warriors were led by Kendra Nielsen who had nine points. Claire Horn had seven points and Cassidy Kirwan had six points.
Flandreau had 21 rebounds and Castlewood had 27. The Fliers had 10 turnovers and the Warriors had 19. Flandreau was 7-of-17 at the free throw line and Castlewood was 4-of-8.

Boys
It was a tough night for the Fliers as they were doubled up on the scoreboard taking 56-28 loss. Castlewood led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter and then extended its lead to 29-15 by halftime. The Warriors would increase their lead to 45-21 heading into the fourth and then outscored the Fliers 11-7 in the final quarter.
Castlewood is a good team ranked #1 in Class B, said Coach Brendan Sheppard.
They are big and athletic which made it hard for us to get to the rim for baskets. We struggled shooting from the perimeter, only making 4 of 22 three point attempts.
Flandreau shot 27.5% from the field. The Fliers were led by Luke Sheppard who had 10 points.
Castlewood shot 40.8% from the field and was 6-of-18 from three. Jamison Keslzer led the Warriors with 20 points and nine rebounds. Brody Bass had 14 points and nine rebounds. Bryon Lue had 12 points and nine boards.
The Warriors had a 41-16 advantage in rebounds. Flandreau had seven turnovers and Castlewood had 10. The Fliers were 1-of-5 at the free throw line and the Warriors were 10-of-13 at the charity stripe.
Castlewood took the JV game, 48-31. Alex Poitra counted nine points Kaden Bursheim and Jadon Eng had six points each.
The Warriors didnt sweep all the Fliers as Flandreau won the C game, 38-34.

Tri-Valley
Girls
FLANDREAU in the girls half of the double header the Fliers outscored the Mustangs, 46-31.
This was an exciting win over a Region opponent, played in front of a great home crowd, said Coach Megan Severtson.
Many girls stepped up when we needed plays, and we were able to string together a couple of stops when it mattered most.
Both teams started out slowly with Flandreau winning the first quarter 7 to 6 before dumping in 14 second quarter points. They led at the half 21-12. Tri-Valley edged the Fliers in points in the third period, 10-9, but the Fliers still held the lead 30-22 heading in the final quarter where they extended their lead by 16 to win.
Morgan Sheppard topped the Flier scoring with 13 points, made eight rebounds and gave out three assists.
Senior Sadie Iott scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds and three steals.
Adding six points and nine rebounds was Hannah Krull.
The Fliers shot 35 percent as a team from the field and 73 at the line.
Flandreau pulled down 40 rebounds to half that many for the Mustangs.
Tri-Valley shot 23.4 percent and were led by Izzy Davey and Mattie Huwe with eight points each.
Flandreaus JV team won 22-18 over Tri-Valley, Nora Hamilton scored six and Rona Streitz, five points.
The Mustangs won the C contest, 36-29. Patricia Roy scored 13 and Ady Krull, 10.

Boys
The Fliers took a non-conference win over the Mustangs, 56-28.
We came into this game with an emphasis on defense and hustle, noted Coach Sheppard.
We really took Tri-Valley out of their game offensively. Xavier and Kody led the charge defensively. We knocked down some 3 point shots which makes the game easier.
The Fliers led after one period 16-8 and also at the half 31-12. They put in 14 third quarter points to the Mustangs 11 and they held the Mustangs at bay in the fourth allowing only three points.
Flandreau shot 50 percent to Tri-Valleys 23. Flandreau was only sent to the free throw line for three shots making all of them while the Mustangs were 6 of 14. Flandreau won the rebound battle, 31-16.
Alfie Henderson led the Flier scoring effort hitting 11 points and Xavier Bien added nine. Paul Parsley gave away six assists and Luke Sheppard brought down seven rebounds and had four assists.
Both subvarsity Flier teams won their game. The JV team won big, 38-13 behind 15 points from Alex Poitra, six from Kody Kneebone and five from Jadon Eng.
The C team narrowly won by a score of 31-29 with Tate Hammer scoring nine, Kenton James, six and Tucker Hemmer, five.
