Place five at competitive MCM wrestling tournament

SALEM Four Fliers placed at the annual McCook Central/Montrose Invitational wrestling tourney on Saturday, January 4 and on Friday, Tenley Quick took third place in the girls division at the highly competitive meet.
It was the first time the Fliers were in competition since December 21.
After a long, two-week Christmas break, the Fliers wrestled well, said Coach Cody Chamblin.
This is a great, tough tournament. Top (Class B) teams from the around the state like Canton, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes and Winner to name a few, were there. Some of our young inexperienced (wrestlers) didnt fair as well, but we are seeing improvements from them each time on the mat.
Friday, the Fliers brought 107 pound Tenley Quick to the girls tournament and saw the newcomer place third. She recorded a 4-1 mark on the day with all four of her wins coming via the fall.
Quicks one loss on the day was to the Class B number five rated Brooke Warejcka from Canton.
She scored 22 points on her own to place the Fliers 16th of 27 schools on the mat.
This was Tenleys first time at 107 weight class and it showed to be the right move, added Chamblin.
Tenley has a bright future, will turn heads and keep the Flandreau girls program growing and being known.
For the boys team on Saturday, Teague Bergjord at 120 (2-2), Zach Pederson at 126 (4-2) and Karter Headrick at 215 (3-2), all fell in their third place matches to finish fourth. At 175 pounds, Justin Klein went 3-2 on the day to take fifth.
The boys as a team scored 68 points to break into top 10 scoring.
Canton won with 234 points, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes was second at 220.5, Winner third (184.5), BonHomme/Avon fourth (160.5), Kingsbury County fifth with 144.
Other top 10 teams were Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall, Redfield, Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney and Elk Point-Jefferson coming in sixth through ninth. There were 21 different schools represented at the invitational.
Each one of Chamblins wrestlers faced at least one top 10 seeded kid in Class B.
Teague went 4-2 on the day losing to the same Bon Homme/Avon kid twice. Hes getting back into the swing of things after having some time off.
Chamblin was happy with the performance from his 126 pound Pederson.
Coming in not seeded in the tournament with a 16-4 record, Zach showed up and showed why he has that record. Falling in his first match, Zach came back through placing fourth. Hes a great kid and always working hard. He just needs a few more things to get him to that next level.
Justin Klein is still showing his power in matches, said Chamblin.
Klein started day off with a bye then went 2-2. Hes coming along great and has a lot to show the rest of the year.
Karters losses were both close ones; to two great kids in the state, Chamblin said.
Hes seeing some 6-minute matches that he normally doesnt see, which is good for him and will help him get better and ready for his goal of the state tournament podium.
Making strides but finishing 0-2 on the day where Aston Duncan, Dalin Billmeier and Rhyder Behnke.
Gabe Frias wrestled to 2-2 on the day.
Hes still trying to find his way to the podium and grab that big win. Gabe is coming along for a second-year wrestler and has a lot of room to grow.
Saturday, the team is in Garretson at the Jesse James Invitational.
This will be a great tournament for us before we hit the grind of quads and more tournaments to finish out the year, noted Chamblin.
