Runners excel at Arlington, Huron meets

The Flandreau Flier Cross Country team ran in two meets last week and were successful in both.
Monday, September 16, they ran at the Lake Region Golf Course and Saturday, they participated in the Clyde Cotton Invite in Huron.

Clyde Cotton Invite
HURON The Fliers ran mostly against Class AA teams at the Clyde Cotton Cross Country Invite Saturday in Huron.
Boys
For the boys, Logan Kontz came in the 58th position with a time of 19:15.73. Wyatt Kontz was 70th at 19:52.54 and Sam Schmidt was 71st with his time of 19:53.20. Brenton Westberry was 74th (20:06.78), Franklin Donis Castillo was 75th (20:07.00) and Daniel Hobbie was 78th, 20:33.54.
Girls
The Flier girls had four runners in the 5000 meter race. Coming in 31st was Kiley Westberry with her time of 21:48.12 and Josie Hamilton with a time of 22:18.51. Tenley LeBrun turned in a time of 22:33.22 for 52nd and Hailey Lahr finished at 23:49.83 for 74th.
JV teams
The JV boys top two runners were Kenton James taking 23rd over the 5000 meter course (20:20.67) and Ben Kulm earning 29th with a time of 20:43.65. JV girl top runners were Trisha Roy taking 21st at 25:21.08 and Isabel Kulm at 26:51.51 for 28th place.
Junior High teams
In the Junior High race consisting of 2900 meters, Tayte Joachims placed first for the Fliers earning 45th at 12:59.49 for the boys and Kaylina Ormseth was the top junior high girl for the Fliers getting 60th at 14:51.32.
Thursday, the Fliers at the Clark Municipal Golf Course for their invitational and then next Tuesday in Volga for the Sioux Valley Invite. After that the season already begins to wind down with two conference meets, regions and state.

At Arlington Invite
LAKE REGION GOLF COURSE The Flandreau Indian School boys and the Flandreau Flier girls won the team titles at the Arlington Cross Country meet held Monday, September 16 at the Lake Region Golf Course. The Flandreau boys team came in second behind the Indians. Both varsity races were over a 5000 meter course.
Girls
The Flandreau girls brought six girls into the chute out of the top 20 spots.
The top three place winners, Faith Wiese, first at 19:01.38, Calla Wiese, third with a time of 21:55.43 and Kiley Westberry, sixth in 22:16.23, combined for 10 points run past Arlingtons second place finish of 15 points. Dell Rapids St. Mary was third with 36 points.
Senior Josie Hamilton came in ninth with her time of 22:36.17, Tenley LeBrun ran to a 10th place finish with her time of 22:38.29 and Morgan Sheppard came in 17th at 23:28.66.
Calla Wiese and LeBrun are new to sport and the varsity squad coming in as seventh graders.
Colman-Egans Izzie Lee ran the race in 24:36.42 to take 23rd. She was the lone Hawk competitor.
The Flier JV girls team also won their division in the 3000 meter race scoring six points. Trisha Roy was first for Flandreau in a time of 13:58.72 and Rona Streitz was second, 13:59.07. Taking sixth was Dreamer Cournoyer with a time of 14:30.61 and Isabel Kulm placed eighth, 14:54.41. Claire Wegner took 13th, Marina Tharrats Lopez was 18th and Kaylina Ormseth came in 19th.
Boys
The Indian Schools Amos Rockman was the first FIS runner in the chute placing fourth. His time was 19:18.23. He was followed in by Shaw Howard with his time of 19:26.76. The third runner, Genio White Hawk, took 12th, 20:06.06.
The Indians scored 13 points. The first and second place runners were not counted in team scores. The Flier boys scored 20 points to take the runner-up spot.
First Flier across the line was freshman Logan Kontz in a time of 19:35.60 to place seventh. Brother Wyatt came in 10th, 20:00.31. Senior Daniel Hobbie was 14th (20:11.06) and junior Teague Bergjord was 15th (20:25.30).
The Fliers then captured the 17th through 20th positions using Franklin Donis Castillo (20:41.61), Kenton James (20:41.85), Kaden Burshiem (20:53.04) and Brenton Westberry (21:02.17).
The JV team took second (21 points) behind a strong Baltic squad who scored six.
Creighton Arnett was sixth in a time of 12:17.56, Pedro Barona was 10th in a time of 12:50.96 and Tayte Joachims took 14th.
Bitsui Domonique of FIS was seventh, 12:18.10.
