With the countdown on for the start of a new school year, plans are in place for the entire community to come together and enjoy an evening at the Flandreau Fall Sports Rally, set for Monday evening, August 19, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. This is the third annual rally, and it will be held in the park area near the Flandreau aquatic center.
This years Rally committee, Megan Severtson, Lori Williams, Sandy Sheppard, Amber Hoffman, Jamie Hemmer and Bethany Thielsen, have planned a fun and full agenda for all ages. Sponsored by the Flier Booster Club, the evening also offers the opportunity for joining the local club, and with the membership, enjoy a pork loin meal that will be served throughout the evening. The Booster Club had 118 members in 2022-23 and raised that to 148 members in 2023-24. It is the contribution of members that allow the group to fund many special opportunities for the athletes at Flandreau Public School.
At a recent meeting, the new membership dues were set for 2024-25. The cost is $20 for a single, $30 for a couple, and $40 for a family. Purchasing the membership provides a meal for the entire family that evening. For anyone who does not buy a membership, a meal may be purchased for $10. A new order of Flier yard signs has been received and may be purchased at the rally.
There will be a 100-square raffle board to buy tickets for the opportunity to win a pair of Flier themed bean bag boards, with the winner drawn at halftime of the homecoming football game.
Available for children age 12 and under, there will be an inflatable obstacle course. There will be a number of raffle items available, with the drawings to be held at 7 p.m. Booster Club members kids will be able to swim for free with the fall athletes. At 7:15, this seasons coaches will give their preview of the upcoming season.
The grand finale will be the Jump for Glory, but prior to that event scheduled at 7:30 p.m., an in-the-pool relay will be held, pitting athletes from the various fall sports. Contestants in the Jump for Glory contest will be taking tips from the recent Olympic divers, and will make their best attempt off the end of the diving board. Prizes will be awarded for most athletic, crowd favorite, best dressed, biggest splash, and an overall winner. Those willing to take the plunge are Jud Krull, Josh Edlund, Emma Peters, Suzie Cleveland, Gabe Frias, Owen Parsley and Cam Flute. Any others who may like to participate should simply contact one of the committee members.
How Booster Club funds are spent
The Booster Club officers remind potential members that their contribution delivers so much for all ages at Flandreau Public School. They were instrumental in obtaining and running the two video boards in the school gyms, thanks to many generous sponsors. They give $500 each year to the sanctioned sports teams, as well as $500 each year to youth programs. The Club pays the summer strength and speed coaches to help our athletes improve in the off-season. The Booster Club provides basketball jerseys for grades 2-8, both boys and girls. They provide $2000 yearly for HUDL video services to assist our high school teams in scouting. Other projects include equipment for the weight room, a portable sound system, paint to refurbish the Booster Club stadium, and the Back-to-School sign displayed each fall.
Your membership also helps the local group sponsor a wrestling tournament, a youth basketball tournament, a fall, winter, and spring sports rally, a track meet and a golf tournament.
Mark your calendars for the Booster Club sponsored Homecoming Tailgate that will be planned prior to the Homecoming football game on September 13 against Sisseton.
