MITCHELL The Flandreau Cardinals saw their season come to an end as the Alexandria Angels scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Flandreau 5-3 at the in the South Dakota Amateur Class B State Tournament at the Cadwell Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals finished the season with a 12-12 record.
Things looked good for the Cardinals early as Zak Wallner and Riley McSherry traded scoreless innings going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Wallner ran into trouble by loading the bases with a pair of walks sandwiched around a single and Cole Wenande brought everyone home with a three-run double to put Alexandria on the board.
Flandreau cut into the lead in the top of the seventh inning with a rally that began with a Beau Severtson walk. Severtson advanced to second base on Rick Webers groundout and Luke Gassman reached on an error to put two runners on.
Chris Burke took advantage with an RBI single for Flandreaus first run of the game and a wild pitch allowed Severtson to score trimming Alexandrias lead to 3-2.
Austin Koenigs one-out double sparked another rally in the top of the eighth and three batters later, Weber singled to drive Koenig home and tie the game at 3-3. But the tie didnt last long as Tyson Gaus two-run double in the bottom of the eighth plated the deciding runs that gave the Angels the 5-3 victory.
Wallner allowed five earned runs on six hits and five walks with a pair of strikeouts over 7.1 innings. Bret Severtson got the final two outs of the eighth inning in relief.
Flandreau had six hits in the game including a 2-for-5 performance by Koenig, who also had a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Burke went 2-for-5 and Weber went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Bret Severtson also went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
