Robert Shane Armstrong of Flandreau had Sheriffs Office officials and other law enforcement on the run this past week, after he escaped from custody following a court hearing that sentenced him to prison time on a drug conviction.
Armstrong was one of two prisoners being transported at the time of the escape. When a Sheriffs Deputy opened the doors of the patrol vehicle to place both inside, Armstrong took off running, stole a vehicle and left the area.
Given he has family and friends in other states, it was uncertain where he might turn up or when he might be apprehended. This past weekend however, a tip came in that Armstrong was in McKennan Park in Sioux Falls. With the help of Sioux Falls Police, he was arrested.
As Armstrong awaits a hearing on the escape charges, he has been transferred to the South Dakota State Prison to start serving the original sentence he received in court.
Should he be found guilty on the new escape charges, he could face a much longer prison sentence than what he had originally been sentenced to on the underlying offense.
No word on the whereabouts of the vehicle he is believed to have stolen.
