It has been years that the start of August meant a couple of big local celebrations Riverside Park Days in Flandreau and Looney Days in Colman.
This year, a reminder that Riverside Park Days will not be held. Organizers decided that after a few years of tough weather on the event and the time commitment year-round needed to pull off a successful weekend, that they might see if a new generation of leaders would consider taking over the event or do something different altogether. No one stepped up to take over.
Looney Days is still on the calendar however for the second weekend in August. Events kick off on Friday, August 9th with a golf tournament at Sunrise Ridge. Food trucks and a chalk the walk event will be held later in the afternoon and evening and for the first time ever, there will be a Little Miss Pageant for kids ages 4-7 and 8-10.
The Colin Donnelly Band will wrap up the evenings events at Gregs Place starting at 9 p.m.
Saturday is another fun-filled day with registration for a 5k Fun Run and 1 mile walk opening up at 7 a.m. and the race itself at 8 a.m. A vendor fair downtown, and lineup for the parade follow, along with kids inflatables, free swimming at the pool, a kids tractor pull, an old-fashioned tug-of-war competition, bean bag competition, and more run throughout the remainder of the day both downtown and throughout the golf course, pool and park areas.
