Half a century of sparks

Every year about this time the signs pop up across Flandreau and Moody County Blum Fireworks does what it can each year to help you have a fun and exciting 4th of July.
But the local small retailer is lighting up the sky and celebrating a dazzling milestone of its own this year: 50 years in business.
Founded in 1974 by Kevin Blum to put himself through college, the now family-run operation has grown into a beloved community staple. His brother Mike took over after his graduation, and has been at the helm ever since.
For my brother, it was about college. For me, its always been about something more, Mike Blum said. Its about family and doing something for our kids, but its also enjoyable, even if it means 9-10 days of 10-12 hour shifts, or 18-hour days around the Fourth of July. If I didnt enjoy it, I wouldnt keep doing it.
The business has evolved over the years, said Blum. He first sold out of a makeshift 14-foot camper and several other locations before finding a home for the shop near downtown Flandreau, in the backyard of their home.
Over the years, the variety and sophistication of the fireworks themselves have also evolved tremendously, going from simple firecrackers and bottle rockets to elaborate displays.
The last ten years have seen an explosion in business, Blum noted, pun absolutely intended.
People want more spectacular displays and are looking for high-quality fireworks to enhance their celebrations.
He added that Blum Fireworks, which often has all of the kids and grandkids around helping, stands out by offering a personal touch that larger stores often lack.
Its more than just selling fireworks; its an experience for families, Blum said. They can browse, ask questions, and enjoy the excitement on their kids faces. Thats a big part of it.
With a legacy of long-term relationships and a commitment to quality, Blum said he and his family hope to continue lighting up the lives of local and regional residents for many years yet to come.
