Flandreau School Board spent the meeting discussing options for the 2024-2025 school year budget.
The State of South Dakota is advising for a 4% increase in salaries. That increase will put the Flandreau School district operating in a deficit of $135,000.
Superintendent Rick Weber suggested the realignment of teachers to make up the deficit.
Earlier in the board accepted the resignation of third grade teacher Heidi Ode and middle school title teacher Ann Kuper, both are retiring at the end of the year. Weber referenced these openings as both possibilities of realigning teachers and not filling those positions.
Realignment is possible with some grades having smaller enrollment numbers. The goal of the board would be to realign teachers, while keeping class sizes close to 20 students per instructor.
No motion was made, as this is just the preliminary look at the 2024-2025 budget.
The board also approved the hiring of Rebecca Toben as a High School English teacher to begin next school year. Josh Cleveland was hired as the middle school golf coach and Liam Streitz as the middle school track coach.
Regretfully the board also accepted the resignation of Business Manager Stacey VanBeek, effective June 30, 2024.
