Unique local holiday gifts are right here in Moody County

If local trends mirror at all what is happening nationally, holiday spending started early, will end late, and it will focus more on affordable self-care and experiences versus bigger ticket physical items for family and friends.

What that might mean for many of you is the opportunity to gift others (or yourself) any number of incredible items and services from a growing number of local small businesses.

As we head into the holidays, a reminder this week of all the local retailers and service providers that Moody County has to offer. And it comes on the heels of taking a call from a visitor to Flandreau recently. She had gone into Gone2Pieces for the first time and couldnt believe what she found, both for gift ideas in the store, and simply the creative and beautiful space that Kristen Britton has created. With that, we will tell you, Gone2Pieces on the corner of Wind Street and Second Avenue is worth the trip. From vintage pieces that youll remember from your grandmothers china, to vintage candies, handmade soaps and candles, knitted scarves and hats, and other artisans creations, there is little chance you wont leave with something for a loved one, or yourself.

Other places you might consider a gift from this holiday season, by location (and if weve missed you, it was in no way intentional! We did our best to try to remember everyone. Add your business to the list in the comment section of this story online):

These are just a few Moody County area businesses. There are more, of course, especially off the beaten path and that are worth a stop or a call into. Local photographers offer gift certificates for future shoots. Local artisan bakers offer specials fresh out of their kitchens, raw milk from their herds, honey from their hives, and homemade maple syrup from their trees. Local beaders and sewers offer beautiful hand-crafted items year-round.

Whoever you may hope to offer a beautiful gift to this season, know there is a lot of power in spending your time and dollars with local entrepreneurs and business owners.

Added benefits less travel time, less congestion, less hassle, and the bonus of knowing that you are supporting a neighbor working to sustain and grow a vibrant community.

If youre still thinking, what more might be out there we havent mentioned? A subscription to the Moody County Enterprise, the entity thats helped keep record of everything thats gone on in the community for more than 100 years, is always also a fun option and not just for locals. Its a great way to keep in touch with family and friends that have perhaps moved away. We have many of our subscribers send out a holiday greeting to friends and family every week of the year with their yearly subscription!

Wishing you all the best of holiday seasons and gatherings ahead.
