Eyeing redevelopment

The only remaining grain elevator in downtown Flandreau will be demolished to make way for future development.
What that might be remains to be seen.
However the Flandreau City Council this past week voted in one of its last moves before adjourning from its regularly scheduled December meeting, to purchase the remainder of the Duncan Elevator property just south of the County Courthouse.
Since the elevator is no longer in operation and the City owns a majority of that block from the Ahlers purchase, the City thought it prudent to pursue the purchase of the Duncan Elevator property, City Administrator Cohl Turnquist said.
Acquisition of that property will place the City in a strong position to redevelop that area in a way that the Council and the community sees fit. The Council has not fully determined their vision for the development of that lot, depending on public input, my recommendation would be that the Council entertain the possibility of developing a mixed-use area consisting of both commercial property and residential properties, said Turnquist.
No date has been scheduled yet for demolition.
Progress continues meanwhile on the new Flandreau Fire Station. Garage doors are expected to be installed in the coming weeks so that crews can work throughout the winter months on the interior of the building.
