Brookings County accident involves local resident

Posted: Tuesday, Jul 13th, 2010

Brookings firefighters and Dakota Service workers pull pieces of the truck out of the ditch, as two residents of the Pleasant Valley Colony look on.

A rural Flandreau man suffered minor injuries Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash south of Brookings in Brookings County.

The collision occurred at the intersection just west of I-29 Elkton exit at about 2 p.m.

South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Austin Schmitz said a Chevy Blazer was traveling north on 472nd and stopped at a stop sign at the intersection. The driver from rural Brookings told authorities she didnít see the westbound grain truck, from Pleasant Valley Colony near Flandreau, and pulled into the intersection. The crash caused the truck to roll into the nearby flooded ditch, where it spilled most of its load of corn and came to a rest facing east.

Schmitz said the truck driver was transported by ambulance to the Brookings hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. The

female driver was not injured in the crash. She was cited for a stop

sign violation. Names of the drivers were not available at press time.
