A Sioux Falls woman died in a two vehicle crash on I-29 south of Brookings this past Friday night.
Colman Fire Chief Jason Landis said that 41-year-old Stephanie Shields had been heading south on I-29 when for reasons unknown, she did a u-turn on the highway and began heading north in the southbound lanes.
Shields collided head on with a semi driven by 50-year-old David Andrew Ziebarth just south of the Ward exit. Shields was killed in the crash. Ziebarth was not injured. Landis says Ziebarth tried to avoid hitting Shields but she went directly into his path.
Ziebarth was hauling a full load of cattle at the time, none of the cattle were injured.
Landis said the accident shut down both the north and southbound lanes of I29 for nearly three hours. Flandreau Fire and Police assisted Colman along with the Moody County Sheriff’s Department and the Highway Patrol.
