Inducted to SD Florists Hall of Fame

Posted: Tuesday, Apr 15th, 2014

One step inside the Flandreau Flower Shoppe and you just know there’s something special about the place. The atmosphere is warm, inviting and unique. The selection of gifts is diverse and the floral arrangements are stunning. Far different than anything most people might expect to find for retail in such a small South Dakota town.

Owner Donna Stenberg has really carved out quite a niche for herself in the 17 years that she’s co-owned and now owned and operated the shoppe. Customers are loyal to her work and drive for miles just to come see what a change of season has brought to the store.

But her patrons aren’t the only ones who consider Stenberg’s work special.

Her colleauges also recognize her talent and dedication to the trade.

Stenberg was recently inducted into the South Dakota Florists Association Hall of Fame.

To receive the award, a retailer has to be nominated by a member of the South Dakota Florists Association accompanied by a letter of recommendation stating one’s career achievements, community service and service to South Dakota Florist Association and the floral industry.

The letter then goes before an executive board and the Hall of Fame committee. If approved, it goes to a vote of the members.

“I did not know I was receiving the award, but other people such as my family and friends and employees knew because some of them made the trip to Pierre and surprised me by walking into the room while I was receiving the award. It was a great feeling to look up and see them all walking in!” said Stenberg.

Stenberg says she is both thrilled and humbled with the recognition. She credits the many educational opportunities the SDFA offers as a way to stay on top of the new trends and techniques of the industry.

The SDFA, in turn, states Donna is one of their most active advocates for ongoing floral education and adds she is a mentor for many of her floral colleagues.

“You should never stop learning. There are many things that inspire me, but one of the best inspirations comes from nature and the beauty that surrounds you everyday. Another inspiration is working with other creative people, one of which is my daughter Sarah, who works at the shoppe with me,” said Stenberg.

The award is now one of many that line the countertop at the Flandreau Flower Shoppe - reminders for both Stenberg and her customers, of the quality and creativity she strives to provide each day

“I would like to thank all the people, both local and out of town people who support us…We appreciate you.”
