Matmen return for home meet

Posted: Monday, Jan 27th, 2014

After a long time without seeing action on the home front, the Flandreau Flier wrestlers returned to their home mat last week hosting a triangular with Marion-Freeman and Beresford.

The Flier split defeating Marion-Freeman, 54-22, before narrowly falling to Class B 5th ranked Beresford, 42-37. The Fliers now have 7 wins and 4 losses in dual matches.

“I thought we wrestled well overall,” said head coach Travis Ahrens.

“We had some new guys that made some nice strides in their matches; being more competitive. Taylor Ryan, Anthony Bakkedahl, and Wayne Quinn come to mind.”

The dual with Marion-Freeman featured the Fliers earning 36 points from Rebel forfeits.

Although the Fliers didn’t win the dual against Beresford, Ahrens saw a couple of the matches as the reason the Fliers kept the score so close.

“The matches from Brock Belkham and Si Flatten were huge in keeping us in the dual.”

“Brock (a freshman) taking on a senior, who was a returning state qualifier, to his back and getting the pin was big,” said Ahrens.

The win fired up his teammates from the bench also and directly following that match was Flatten’s 11-1 major decision over Kaleb Petersen.

“Si avenged a loss earlier in the year to the Beresford wrestler (Petersen), by bumping up a weight class and majoring him, which was great to see.”

Ahrens also said that he feels Logan Barboza has started to elevate his wrestling and is turning the corner as the Fliers’ big guy.

“Dylan Rice, Jace Christiansen and Jake Scofield continue to plug away and pick up big points for us,” he concluded.

Going undefeated on the night were Michael Witte, Dylan Rice, Brock Belkham, Si Flatten, Jake Scofield, Jace Christiansen and Logan Barboza.

Each picking up one win on the mat were Taylor Ryan, Ira Zephier and Austin Johnson.
