Changes brewing at Bean and Vine

Posted: Monday, Jan 6th, 2014

Todd Hinricher and Katie McKee are the new owners of the Bean and Vine in Flandreau. They took over the coffee shop and liquor store on Jan. 1 and plan a grand reopening in February.
Katie McKee’s plans never included working in the food service industry.

“We’re switching gears here,” McKee said, as she and her fiancé, Todd Hinricher, purchased Bean and Vine in Flandreau.

The new owners took over on Jan. 1 from Bean and Vine’s founder, Kelley Ramsdell.

“It was a great opportunity that presented itself,” said McKee, who originally planned to be a physical education teacher.

“Katie always wanted to own her own business,” Hinricher said. “We didn’t want to see a franchise come in. We wanted to see it smaller, local, friendly.”

McKee, who is originally from Dell Rapids, will run the business that has eight employees.

Hinricher, who farms near Flandreau, calls himself a “silent, silent partner.” McKee jokes that his only role so far is coming in for lunch to taste the food.

The Bean and Vine has an extensive menu with items for breakfast, lunch and dinner including pizza as well as flavored coffees. The back of the shop features a full liquor store.

McKee says she has some changes planned for the menu and the décor. She also has her eye on some retail gift items that may be sold at the coffee shop.

McKee was attracted to the business by the “coffee shop atmosphere.” Hinricher notes that different clienteles are represented at the Bean and Vine throughout the day with morning and afternoon groups.

“They come in to socialize over coffee,” Hinricher said.

A grand reopening at the business is planned for February.
