Tribe unveils Woicaga Otipi Community Center

A near capacity crowd filled the bleachers at the dedication open house ceremony last Wednesdasy for the newly constructed Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Community Center on West Board Avenue in Flandreau.

The Tate Topa Youth Drum Group was responsible for the naming of the new facility. The name wasn’t disclosed until this special event. The name of the new facility is “Woicaga Otipi” which means “A Place for All Generations” in the Dakota language.

FSST President Tony Reider welcomed the people attending. Tribal Elder Everett Weston gave a prayer, which was followed by a Round Dance to the Honor Song again led by the drum and drummers.

Then Redwing Thomas spoke and told of the journey of the Dakota people and how this new facility was the culmination of a dream that generations of the past who had a dream of such a meeting place for their people. He also spoke of how this will be a safe place for the children and how any differences there might be anywhere else won’t be brought into this building. He stressed that it would be a place for people of the entire community to interact as one.

The final event of the program was an honoring and presentation of traditional Star Quilts to individuals who helped make the building possible: Garrie Kills-A-Hundred, former Executive Committee member; Larry Ostenstad and Pete Johnson of Kraus Anderson, the General Contractor of the project; Thomas Ranfranz, former FSST Executive President and Redwing Thomas, the Dakota Language Instructor for the tribe.

After the naming ceremony, a traditional meal was served at Eastman Hall.
