The Flandreau Volunteer Fire Department has a brand new rig parked in their garage thanks to the purchase approval of a new 2012 International fire pumper/tanker by the city council at their May 6th meeting.

Although the truck’s price tag of $281,934 seems like a large number, the new rig will get its fair share of use as it is a 2-in-1 vehicle. The new truck will replace their oldest pumper, a 1973 Chevy, as well another tanker, which will help ease the cost of the new rig.

The 30,000 gallon truck can be used for both community fires as well as rural fires, which makes it very versatile in a community such as Flandreau and Moody County.

With the addition of the new truck, the FVFD now has six vehicles at their disposal: a grass rig, two other pumpers, a rescue van as well as the traditional ladder truck.

The new truck has thankfully not been put to the test yet locally but members of the FVFD took the truck out to State Fire School in the Black Hills a few weeks back and worked with it out there.

“We are very fortunate to have such a nice truck at the Flandreau Fire Department,” Fire Chief Judd Krull said.
