Lawrence Alton “Larry” Herbert, age 93 of Lamoni, IA, died April 24, 2013 at the Lamoni Nursing and Rehab Center.
Larry was born Jan. 11, 1920 in Flandreau to Harry and Etta Herbert. He worked on the family farm south of Flandreau as well as working for other family and friends before entering the military. After his discharge he moved to Cedar Falls/Waterloo, IA area where he worked for his cousin Charlie Herbert learning the appliance repair trade. He married Gracia Lorena Smith in 1947 in Waterloo. Larry worked and refined his skills in appliance and refrigeration maintenance and repair at several places in Blackhawk County. The couple lived in Tampa, FL for over 20 years where they owned and operated a Laundromat business. Throughout their years together, Larry and Gracie loved to travel extensively throughout the U.S and had been to almost every state including Alaska on two different occasions. Larry started the Sundowner Village Mobile Home Park in Lamoni. He took pride in helping the residents and maintaining the mobile homes at their park. Larry and Gracia would buy used travel trailers, fixing them up and reselling them. Upon retiring they lived on the road a couple of years, seeing new places and meeting new friends. Eventually they purchased a home in Bolivar, MO where they resided for 14 years before moving back to Lamoni, IA on April 9, 2013.
Larry is survived by his wife: Gracia of Lamoni; three sisters: Dorothy Schneider of Rapid City, Doris Jordan of Hartford, SD and Donnell of Phoeniz, AZ; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and Floyd.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 30 at the Lamoni United Methodist Church in Lamoni, IA with Pastor Jodi Rushing officiating. Burial was at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Lamoni, IA.
