While the calendar may not indicate that we are early in the track and field season, it is definitely still early as both Flandreau and Colman each have limited time on the track.

Flandreau’s track season has been highlighted by the success of their sprinters early on. Despite not being able to get outside and work on their craft for most of the season, the Fliers have managed to qualify runners for the State Meet in four different events.

The 4x100 M team of Jacob Patterson, Ted Slattery, David Parsley and DJ Johanson got things started by breaking standard last weekend at the Barker Relays in Madison but the sprinters continued their success this week at Sioux Valley. Two Fliers qualified for State in the 100 M dash. Parsley and Johanson each broke standard last Tuesday. Parsley ran an 11.1 to finish first in the race while Johanson took second in the race with an 11.2. Patterson finished fourth in the heat with an 11.8.

But the Fliers took home several more top three finishes on Tuesday. Johanson finished first in the 200 with Parsley finishing second. Derick Veldkamp finished third in the 400-meter dash and Geno Taylor Burshiem took home second in the 800-meter run.

Anthony Julson won the 1600-meter run with Dylan Erickson taking second prize. The two teammates swapped places in the 3200-meter run with Erickson finishing first and Julson finishing right behind him.

Other top finishers included Skyler Scofield in the 110-meter hurdles (2nd) and 300-meter hurdles (first) with the 4x100 and 4x200 relay team taking top honors. Alex Bakkedahl won the Triple Jump and took second in the Long Jump. The Flier boys’ team took home the overall team title with 179 points, besting host Sioux Valley by just two points.

On the girls’ side, Morgan Orlick finished first in the 800-meter run with teammate Marilyn Allen finishing in second place. Allen also took home second in the 1600-meter run. Brookyln Behrens finished the Triple Jump in second place with Erica Behrens finishing fifth.

As a team, the Fliers finished in fifth with 61 points.

The boys and girls also competed at the O’Gorman Invite on Friday with only one top three finish, a Skyler Scofield first place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.06.

The week wrapped up for Flandreau with just a couple of runners competing at the 88th Howard Wood Dakota Relays. With the poor weather, the Fliers did not compete in many events but DJ Johanson managed to qualify for the State track meet in the 200-meter dash with a FAT time of 23.15.

Flandreau hosted the Lake Central Conference Meet yesterday and will also be in the Big East Conference meet on Friday in Salem.

The Hawks got their first chance to run outdoors all year and just their second time to run overall. That did not stop some of Colman-Egan’s finest from finishing on the top of the standings.

The highlight of the Inaugural Baltic Invite for the Hawks might have been senior Riley Clark qualifying for the State meet in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.00.

The boys’ team had three other top five finishes on Tuesday, including a second place finish 1600-meter medley team. Dennis Park shined in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing fourth with a time of 19.50.

The girls’ team saw a lot of success, especially in the sand pits. Paityn Groos finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 14-05 with teammate Kyria Westover also jumping a 14-05 to finish in 6th. Groos also took third in the triple jump with a leap of 31-03.

Callie Verver took home third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.30 as well as a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 28.60. The 4x100 and 4x200 teams both finished fourth with the 4x800 team taking home sixth place.

Like Flandreau, the Hawks sent just a few runners to the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday. The girls’ 4x100-meter team of Tori Nelsen, Hailey Harms, Paityn Groos and Callie Verver took home a fifth place finish to highlight Colman-Egan’s participants.

The Hawks will be busy this week with track meets including the DVC meet in Estelline tomorrow.
