Fliers send six to State B mat meet

Posted: Tuesday, Feb 19th, 2013

Tate Lacey wrangles Evan Donahue of Howard on his way to a 138 lb. championship.
After competing in last weekends regional meet in Salem, the Flandreau Flier wrestlers have earned six spots in this years State Wrestling tournament this upcoming weekend in Aberdeen.

Five of the six wrestlers who qualified for the State meet have been there before but eighth grader Dylan Rice will be making his first after finishing third in the 106 lb division.

Rice lost a close 3-2 decision to Beresford’s Nick Casperson in the semi finals but rebounded to beat Tait Johnson of Garretson and Jordan Scheier of McCook Central/Montrose to claim third place and his first trip to the State tournament.

Senior Tate Lacey continued his season of dominance by finishing first place in the 138 lb. division and earning his third trip to the State meet. Lacey, who entered the tournament as the two seed at 34-2, defeated the top seeded Evan Donahue (25-2) of Howard in the championship via a major decision 15-4. Lacey was the only Flier over the weekend to win his respective weight title.

Returning to the State meet to try and defend his title as ‘State Champ’ will be Jace Christiansen. Christiansen, who won last years 132 lb title, will be competing this year as a 145 lb wrestler. He lost to Canton’s Alex Davies in the region championship last weekend via a 6-1 decision. It will be Christiansen’s fourth trip to the State meet.

Also making his fourth appearance at the State meet will be junior Jake Scofield who placed third in last weekend’s regional tournament in Salem. Scofield lost to eventual champion Zach Shuman (51-1) of Tri-Valley in the semi finals but rebounded to defeat Gage Pueger of Canton to earn third place and a trip to the state meet.

Joining Jake at the State tournament will be his older brother, Kyle Scofield, who will be making his fifth appearance at the State tournament, most of any Flier. Scofield placed second last weekend in Salem, losing a tight 8-6 decision in overtime to James Jungwirth of Howard.

The State tourney birth is just another accomplishment for Kyle Scofield who picked up his 200th career victory at the Tri-Valley quad two weeks ago when he pinned Taylor Larsen of Kingsbury County, just the second Flier ever to earn that many wins – Cody Reed is the only other, finishing with 231 wins in his career.

Wrapping up the Fliers State meet representatives is senior Dakota Petersen. Petersen entered the Regional meet as the two seed at 35-5 and finished in third after defeating Nick Pardy of Howard in the third place match. Petersen will be making his second appearance at the State tournament this weekend in Aberdeen.

“We believe everyone of these guys have the potential to score points at the state tourney and wrestle on the second day,” said Flandreau head coach Travis Ahrens.

As a team, the Fliers finished sixth at the regional meet with three wrestlers, Casey Johnson, Brock Belkham and Logan Barboza, each coming up one win short of qualifying for the State meet.

The 2013 State Wrestling meet begins Friday and concludes Saturday.
