Fliers go 2-1 at Parkston; get fifth at Tri-Valley

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 15th, 2013

Lacey, Christiansen and K. Scofield each earn 1st at Tri-Valley

Flandreau’s wrestling squad experienced just about everything there is when they took the mat in Parkston last Tuesday night. The night started with a nail-biting victory of West Lyon (IA), followed by a blow out victory over Parker and concluded with a loss to Parkston.

The duel with West Lyon (IA) was close all the way through, with Flandreau winning all of the matches they expected, but it was a comeback victory by Brock Belkham that sealed the deal for Flandreau. FHS won by a final score of 42-36.

There was never really any question about the outcome in the Duel with Parker. Flandreau won all but two match-ups on their way to the 66-11 final.

The final duel of the night for Flandreau was against the No. 1 ranked team in the state in Parkston. Flandreau battled tough but the experience of Parkston was too much for the youthful Fliers. “There were some great matches, we were tough where they were tough and we won the majority of those matches. They were just to deep and experienced for us throughout the line-up,” coach Travis Ahrens said after the duel.

Flandreau picked up wins against Parkston from Casey Johnson, Jace Christiansen, Kyle Scofield and Dakota Petersen. Combined, those four wrestlers went 12-0 on the night.

Four FHS wrestlers went 2-1 on Tuesday. Dylan Erickson, who picked up his first varsity win when he pinned his opponent from Parker. Tate Lacey, who fell late against Parkston for his first loss of the season, Jake Scofield and Brock Belkham rounded out the two-win wrestlers for FHS.

Michael Pulscher also picked up his first career varsity win after pinning his opponent from Parker. Si Flatten and Logan Barboza both went 1-2 and rounded out the varsity victories for Flandreau.

The Fliers then hit the road for the Tri-Valley Invitational on Saturday. FHS came out of the tournament with three first place finishers and a fifth place team finish. Pipestone Area took home the title, with Tri-Valley finishing second.

Tate Lacey won his third 138 lb tournament championship in as many chances on Saturday night when he defeated Elk Point Jefferson’s Jared Hueser by a 3-2 decision.

Lacey was joined by teammate Jace Christiansen, who pinned Elk Point Jefferson’s Jared Limoges in the 145 lb championship, and Kyle Scofield who defeated Kimball/White Lakes’, Turner Blasius by major decision in the 170 lb division.

Dakota Petersen finished second in the 182 lb division after losing a 4-2 decision to Jackson Entringer of Dell Rapids.

Casey Johnson was the final Flier to earn a medal. Johnson finished fourth after losing to Austin Oyen of Tri-Valley during the second round. Oyen was defeated by Christiansen in last year’s 132 lb state championship match, and is the favorite to win it in 2013. Johnson then defeated Tye Klinnert who was wrestling unattached before falling in the third plaee match to Colby Pierret of Garretson.

The Fliers will hit the mat again tomorrow night in Beresford for a triangular and again on Saturday in Arlington for the Kingsbury County Tournament.
