The Flandreau Flier wrestling team traveled to Brandon on Saturday to compete in the Dan Pansch/Jesse James Invitational. The Fliers competed with several “A” schools and came out with a sixth place team finish. The 14 team tournament was won by the Huron Tigers.
Highlighted by a Tate Lacey first place finish in the 138 lb. division, the Fliers had seven wrestlers place on Saturday. Lacey now has back-to-back first place finishes in his only two tournaments of the year.
Three Fliers earned runner-up medals in Brandon. Kyle Scofield took home second place in the 170 lb. division. Scofield was pinned by Brandon Valley’s Mason Bender in the championship bout. Dakota Petersen lost an 8-2 decision to Canton’s Kase Jacobs in his final match of the day.
Jace Christiansen rounded out the runner-up medals for FHS via a 2-1 decision versus Canton’s Alex Davies. It was the first loss of the season for Christiansen.
Three other Fliers placed on Saturday. Jake Scofield took home the fifth place medal after defeating Wyatt Winter of Brandon Valley via a 3-1 decision in the 152 lb. division. Casey Johnson took home 7th place in the 132 lb. division and Si Flatten earned the 8th place medal in the 126 lb. division.
Brock Belkham, who earned the eighth place medal a week ago at MCM, Logan Barboza, who earned seventh at MCM and Trevor Heinemann who garnered eighth place at MCM, all responded from their first medals of the year by wrestling some good matches but came up short in Brandon.
Also, Elliot Amdahl, Saud Ahlschlager, Dylan Erickson and Michael Witte took to the mat on Saturday but fell just short of medal contention.
Saturday’s meet will be one of the hardest meets the Fliers will compete in all season.
“It was a great tournament with some really great teams. Our kids wrestled well overall. Everybody got some great matches in against some solid competition and that experience will pay dividends at the end of the year,” said Head Coach Travis Ahrens.
The following are some results from the Brookings JV Jamboree that the Flier junior varsity team took part in a few weeks back.
Tegan Lacey 3-0; Martin Ruelas 3-1; Michael Witte 4-0; Dylan Rice 4-0; Si Flatten 2-1; Saud Ahlschlager 2-1; Elliot Amdahl 1-2; Brock Belkham 2-2; Logan Barboza 1-1.
“These guys are our future and they have been solid in practice and have been improving throughout the year,” said Ahrens.
FHS wrestlers competed last night in Parkston and will head to a meet on Saturday at Tri-Valley. Results will be in next week’s paper.
