Quarriers edge Flier boys late

Posted: Monday, Dec 31st, 2012

Flandreau's Guy Zephier pulls up for a jump shot in transition over the defense of Dell Rapids' Zane Schumaker during the first half of the Fliers' 60-57 loss to the Quarriers in Saturday's Entringer Scholarship Classic at Bob Jostad Gymnasium in Brookings.

The Flandreau Flier boys’ basketball team erased a huge first quarter deficit to take a one point lead into the final frame but the Quarriers of Dell Rapids public used a lights out shooting performance in the fourth to edge to Fliers 60-57 at the Michael J Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday night.

Flandreau started the game really flat offensively and could not get any buckets to fall for most of the first eight minutes. Dell Rapids took full advantage of the Flier struggles by taking a 17-8 lead into the second quarter.

FHS started hitting on all cylinders once the clocked started in the second. All five players on the court were contributing big baskets and it seemed as if they couldn’t miss in the quarter. Flandreau outscored the Quarriers by six but still trailed 29-26 heading into the halftime break.

The Fliers outscored Dell Rapids in the third quarter but both teams struggled shooting the ball for the most part. The two teams managed to put up just 22 points in the quarter combined. Flandreau was able to fully overcome the early lead by Dell Rapids to take a one-point lead, 39-38, heading into the fourth quarter of play.

The two teams went back to their scoring ways for the fourth quarter. Any time the Fliers scored, Dell Rapids answered right back with a score of their own. The Fliers battled the whole night and didn’t give up any of that effort for the fourth quarter, but unfortunately for FHS, the Quarriers were able to score just enough baskets to take the 60-57 win.

Geno Taylor-Burshiem lead the Fliers offense with 16 points on 5-16 shooting but two other Fliers posted double figures as well. Mitchel Foster (15) and Guy Zephier (12) had nice nights from the floor. Zephier shot 5-8 on the night, while Foster added a team high five rebounds.

The loss moves the Fliers record to 2-2 on the season and will look to improve on that record when they play in the Big East Conference Tournament this week.
