The Flandreau Flier wrestling team took to the road for the first time all season, placing fifth place at the McCook Central/ Montrose tournament in Salem on Saturday afternoon.
Flandreau picked up three individual victories during the tournament. Tate Lacey, Jace Christiansen and Dakota Petersen all won their respective weight classes.
Lacey was wrestling in his first tournament of the year and is now just one of two undefeated wrestlers on Flandreau’s squad after his 138# tournament victory.
The other undefeated wrestler, Christiansen, dominated his 145# weight class for his second tournament victory of the season. Coach Travis Ahrens was impressed with Christiansen.
“He wrestled the third ranked kid in the state in the finals and really controlled the match all the way through.”
Ahrens was also impressed with his 182# champion. “Dakota [Petersen] really wrestled one of his best matches of his career in the finals. He had a purpose and executed great strategy during the match. He wrestled physical and finished matches, looked sharp.”
Casey Johnson and Jake Scofield took home second place finishes for the Fliers. Ahrens couldn’t have been happier with Johnson’s performance.
“Casey [Johnson] had one of his best tournaments in his career. He ran into a very solid opponent in the finals, but we were very pleased with the way he wrestled.”
Kyle Scofield took home a third place finish for the Fliers in the 170# division.
Despite not having a single individual champion, Philip took home the team title thanks to six runner-ups. The Fliers will head to Garretson for their next action on Saturday.
