County finalizes 2013 budget

Posted: Tuesday, Oct 2nd, 2012

By Billy Stitz

The County Commissioners met for their final meeting of September last Tuesday and on the agenda was completing the 2013 budget for Moody County.

Overall, the budget looks fairly similar to last year’s numbers. In 2012 the county budget was $6.218 million. The county has worked some things around and with a year that plans to have less repair work than last, they have managed to cut the 2012 budget down by four percent for 2013.

Some of the biggest increases for the 2013-year come in the ‘Data Processing’ section of the commissioners department. The increase goes from $20 thousand to $76.5 thousand, an astonishing 283 percent. But that number is a little misleading. Recent government audit forced some numbers to be moved from different departments to that specific department. So in reality, the overall money being used is not more, just what department uses it.

The county has also decided to increase the ‘Domestic Abuse’ budget by 100% to $2,000. As of at least the end of August of this year, the county had already used up its allotted $1,000 dollars with four months remaining in the year.

Both the Hospital and the County Museum added 15 thousand dollars to their budget for projects that the county is going to help fund for the 2013 fiscal year. The hospital received no dollars from the county last year and the Museum received their normal budget of $3,000.

The County Sheriff’s office only gained a three percent raise in their budget from 2012 to 2013, but it is noteworthy since the increase brings the sheriff’s budget over half-a-million dollars for the first time.

In order for the overall budget to decrease with all of the increases listed above, there has to be some major decreases in budget. One of the biggest decreased budgets comes in the ‘Government Building’ section of the 2013 budget. During the 2012 year, the county court house building has seen many improvements and repairs along with other county buildings. The budget for 2012 was 225 thousand dollars - the 2013 budget has decreased by 48% to just below 117 thousand dollars.

Of course there are a lot less elections in scheduled for the 2013 year, therefore the elections budget gets dropped significantly. As a matter of fact it drops 82% from 31k to just $5,500 dollars.

The ‘Highway and Bridge’ budget drops slightly, but by percent standards only. The budget will drop just one percent but is the equivalent to just under 100 thousand dollars.

After adding all of the other smaller budgets together, the county comes up with a 2013 budget of $5,994,247.
