Last Wednesday, while construction crews were prepping the area that was going to be the new parking lot at the Avera Flandreau Hospital, workers struck an unmarked gas line that caused it to burst.
The energy company and the Flandreau Volunteer Fire Department were sent out to the scene and the clinic was evacuated. All of the patients in the hospital section of the building stayed in the building during the mishap.
Personnel from the FVFD went around and spoke with the surrounding neighborhood to let them know what had happened and gave them some preventative advice.
“We are taking all the necessary precautions to keep our patients safe,” said Hospital Administrator Lindsay (Lieschner) Flannery.
The FVFD was on the scene for six hours but in the end, no body was harmed and the crew was able to get back to work on Thursday.
