While the Crystal Theatre in Moody County is working on its own upcoming performances, our neighbor theatre to the east is entering the final stages of dress rehearsal for a major production of its own.
Cats is coming to the Pipestone Community Theatre. The Calumet Players are scheduled to take the stage for two weekends, starting June 19th and among the cast this year will be Dan Sutton of Flandreau.
“It was one of the first musicals that I attended out in New York while in college, we performed some of the songs from the show as well while I was in a singing group in college so the production has a lot of history and meaning with me. When the opportunity came up to be a part of the cast in Pipestone, I thought, I don’t really have the time. But my wife pushed me to go and be a performer, which I love. And I’ve not been able to do much of that lately with all of the behind the scenes stuff I often end up doing,” said Sutton.
Sutton plays one of the main characters in CATS, Rum Tum Tugger.
“I went, auditioned, and they gave me the part. It’s been really fun. The part I have, it’s the cat that gets to do things none of the other cast get to do. Everyone loves him but he’s aways doing things others can’t believe he’s always doing. I get to interact with the public and people there where others don’t get to do that, he’s the entertainer of the show,” said Sutton.
Sutton says perhaps what’s best about it is meeting a lot of new people and performing in a different venue.
“Hopefully it’s a chance to participate in another fun theatre and maybe it’s a chance for them to participate in one of our productions. It’s just a good opportunity for Flandreau and Pipestone to work together.”
