Career Development Event will be held Monday
The local FFA Chapter at Flandreau Public Schools is very busy this time of year. The Flandreau FFA chapter is home to one of east river’s largest spring Career Development Events (CDEs); not considering the state competition.
Flandreau consistently hosts more than 900 students for this event that they host each year in March, and any of the state’s 80 FFA programs can send members. The Flandreau FFA chapter puts in long hours, and does various tasks throughout the day to make sure things run smoothly, from registering each student present, and the events they will be competing in, to grading tests and entering data into computers, or helping with each CDE, making sure everything goes smoothly.
Career Development Events are opportunities for FFA members to try new things that may lead them on a potential career path. Some of the events FFA members can do are Dairy Cattle, where they judge a dairy cow by its various physical characteristics, or Horse Judging, where they may do the same for a horse. But not all events are related to animals, there are also Agricultural Mechanics, floriculture, meats evaluation, and many more. Newer CDE’s, which involve a more business-like look into agriculture are available too, the Food Science CDE is when each school can prepare a team, and they will make up a product, learn about it, its nutritional facts, and the components of the product, once all of that is completed they will present their project to a panel of judges.
Many of the CDEs in Flandreau starts the day off with a written test, followed by various hands-on tasks to show their knowledge and skill of the event they’re involved in. By the end of the day, the Flandreau FFA members usually have most, if not all of the contest results completed, and they then prepare to send them to each individual school. The Flandreau CDE will be hosted by the FFA chapter, with the help of its members, and the many people who donate their time to help ensure success on Monday, March 18th, 2013 in Flandreau.
