Armory/community Center roof replacement begins
Posted: Tuesday, Jul 27th, 2010

Crews have begun replacing the roof of the Flandreau Community Center/Armory gymnasium.

Flandreau City Administrator Chuck Jones announced at the July 19 Flandreau City Council meeting that the project would soon be underway.

Architectural Roofing and Sheet Metal Inc. (ARS) out of Sioux Falls was hired to do the work at a cost of $29,520. ARS is also working on replacing the roof of the Moody County Courthouse.

The council agreed to accept bids on the roof repair in May after Public Works Superintendent Don Johnston informed councilors that the roof was in “dire need” of repair.

The smaller roofs on the facility, including the roof over the Flandreau Community Center, will likely be replaced later, but the gymnasium roof was seen as being in the most immediate need.

More work will be done at the community center and armory in August, according to Jones. New boilers funded through a grant will be installed. A grant of $24,000 will cover that cost, Jones said.

The council is also considering replacing the dance floor at the Japanese Gardens, according to Jones. The council agreed at last week’s meeting to look at bids for the project.

Also at last week’s meeting, the council appoved a proposal from Clark Engineering for a study and facility plan for Flandreau’s water system. The majority of the work will be paid for by a small community planning grant, according to Jones. The grant will cover $6,000, while the city will pay the remaining $1,500 as a local match.

Jones said the grant is available for small communities of less than 2,500 people. He said the study is being performed to investigate future water and wastewater system needs for the community. There aren’t any problems with the system, he said, but the city decided to do the study because of the available grant money.

“Basically it’ll perform an environmental review and part of that will evaluate existing and future conditions to include existing water supply and distribution systems,” he said. The study will also “develop population projections and their effect on the existing water facilities,” Jones explained.

Water use records will also be reviewed.

The council also heard budget requests from the various entities that are subsidized by the City of Flandreau. Those requests, which will be reviewed by the city council, include:

• Moody County Boys and Girls Club - $6,000 (increase of $1,000 from last year)

• Community Counseling Services - $7,600 (same as last year)

• Inter-Lakes Community Action - $5,700 (decrease of $1,250 from last year)

• Flandreau City Band - $4,500 (no change from last year)

• Flandreau Crystal Theatre - $6,000 (same as last year)

• Flandreau Development Corporation - $80,000 (would increase land fund to $50,000 and leave operating subsidy at $30,000)

• Moody County Historical Society - $5,000 (same as last year)

The council also approved two new members for the Flandreau Volunteer Fire Department – Tyler Tiedeman and Tyler Kills A Hundred.
