Gen. Scott to address FIS students, staff Public welcome to attend
Modified: Tuesday, Mar 16th, 2010

In recognition of the presence of an AmeriCorps National Community Civilian Corps team at the Flandreau Indian School for the next few weeks, Brigadier General Donald L. Scott, U.S. Army (Retired) will address students, staff, and the general public on March 24 at FIS. General Scott is the Founder and first National Director of AmeriCorps NCCC, established in 1994. In addition to his long and distinguished military career, he also served as Deputy Librarian of the Library of Congress.

The AmeriCorps team will work as volunteers with students and staff in carrying out several maintenance and refurbishing tasks and will work as tutors and program assistants with students. The team will be on the campus from March 18 through April 22.

AmeriCorps is a national volunteer organization, sister program to the earlier-established VISTA, Volunteers in Service to America, administered in South Dakota by the Volunteers of America-Dakotas.

General Scott will be the honored guest at a program in the FIS gymnasium, in which the school’s JROTC will perform, including its celebrated rifle drill team. That event will take place at 3:15 pm, Wednesday, March 24, and will also feature several other FIS student programs and groups who are being honored for their achievements this school year.

At 7 pm that same evening General Scott will address the student body, staff, and invited guests to a public presentation in the auditorium. His focus will be on his own military career, the AmeriCorps NCCC program, and the Library of Congress, one of the nation’s oldest and most significant institutions.

General Scott will also visit many classrooms and engage in small group discussions with students and staff while he is here.

The AmeriCorps NCCC team will be available during their time at FIS to visit other local and regional organizations and institutions to explain the program.
