Boys fourth at DVC

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 22nd, 2013

The Colman-Egan boys took part in the Dakota Valley Conference tournament last week in Elkton and White. The Hawks got things started with a big win over Estelline on Tuesday, but failed to earn a win in their remaining two games on Friday and Saturday.

The boys got things started early and often in the route of the Redmen on Tuesday night. The boys had the hot hand from beyond the three-point line on their way to a big first half.

Colman-Egan jumped out to a 16-6 first quarter lead thanks to some timely shooting from Keaton Westover and Riley Clark.

After adding 17 more points in the second quarter, the Hawks were able to establish a 33-20 first half lead. C-E was shooting an impressive 13-25 (52%) from the field, including 4-7 (57%) from behind the arc.

Colman-Egan’s offense slowed down a bit in the second half but their defense was still as stout as it was to begin the game. The 10 points the Hawks put up in the third quarter was the least they scored all game but despite shooting poorly, they held the Redmen to just 12 points, while holding on to an 11 point lead.

The Hawks offense picked it back up a bit in the fourth quarter, pounding out 15 more points and only allowing nine on their way to the 58-41 victory.

The Hawks shot just 26% (7-27) in the second half but were able to go 10-14 (72%) from the free-throw line.

Westover led the Hawks with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Clark picked up another double-double by adding 10 rebounds to his 13 points. Matt Nelson had an impressive all around game by picking up nine points, seven rebounds and a team leading four assists.

The win pushes the Hawks record to 5-7 on the year, while dropping the Redmen’s record to 5-4. Estelline had previously beaten Colman-Egan 54-40 in December.
