Lady Fliers win; back over .500

Posted: Monday, Dec 31st, 2012

It was extremely rare to see the Flandreau Fliers trailing in their game with Howard last Friday night, outplaying the Tigers in almost every facet of the game and taking a huge 49-39 victory to improve their record to 3-2 on the season.

The Fliers have been notorious for starting games off fast and taking a lead into the second quarter. In both of their losses, they gave those leads up before halftime. That was not the case on Friday. The Fliers jumped off to a fast 16-10 start and only trailed after the first couple of baskets. The Fliers did not give up that lead for the remainder of the game.

The Fliers were outscored 10-8 by Howard in the second quarter but still had a small four-point cushion heading into the halftime break. Howard took that lead down to three after the third quarter and it was starting to look like the Fliers might lose a heartbreaker, despite playing so well.

But then the fourth quarter started and the Fliers turned their game to a higher level. Every girl on the court was producing in one-way or another and the Fliers were able to pretty much have their way with the Tigers. After a hard fought battle, the Fliers came out atop with a 49-39 Big East Conference victory.

If there had been any doubters out there about how good this Flier team could be, Friday nights game may have swayed their opinion. FHS shot 20-32 (63%) from inside the three-point line, while also dominating the glass by pulling in 27 rebounds during the night.

Makayla Dietrich led the Fliers with 13 points on 6-13 shooting while Marisa Hare posted 11 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Taylor Peters, eight points, and Hannah Williams, seven points, combined to go a perfect 6-6 from the field.

The girls will look to improve on their 3-2 record next week when they take on Garretson, Madison and Flandreau Indian.
