Years at Flandreau: 17

Assistant Coach: Andrea Gullickson

Years at Flandreau: 7

Experience is the name of the game for the Flandreau Flier girl’s basketball team. The Fliers only graduated one player from last years seven win team and the experience that the returning girls have should play a major part in how many numbers get inserted into the win column in 2012.

Experience plays a big part in any team’s success – especially when it comes to playing on the road. Where most teams struggle playing on the road, the Fliers play their best basketball. FHS was 4-5 on the road but a gloomy 3-10 at home. With another year of work under their belts, the girls should be more comfortable at home and improve on that record.

One of Flandreau’s returning players is senior, Makayla Dietrich. Coming off a year where she was honored as a Big East All Conference player, Dietrich was FHS’ second leading scorer behind departed Brook Relf, with 10.2 points per game (PPG). She is force down low, collecting 116 rebounds a year ago and with the departure of Relf, both of those stats should skyrocket.

Beside Dietrich, the Fliers are littered with senior leadership. Kelly Johanson will be expected to be a keystone to the Flier success in 2012, Johanson averaged 5.6 ppg last season and picked up over three rebounds per game (rpg).

Brice Rose will be leaned on to create shots for her teammates. The leading assist giver from a year ago, Rose is a vital part to Flandreau’s fast moving offense.

Kendra Duncan is a versatile guard that does not turn the ball over. Flandreau will look to her to bring the ball up and keep the opposing defenses honest with her ball control.

Several other girls from a year ago will be key players in how the Fliers perform in 2012. Marisa Hare is a force down low. Hare averaged over three rpg last season while only averaging 11 minutes a game.

Taylor Peters is the youngest of the stars for Flandreau. The junior played a majority of the minutes at a guard position last year. She was second on the team in assists while averaging 3.4 ppg.

Other players expecting to make an impact for the Fliers are seniors, Keisha Jackson and Kara Uilk along with juniors, Amy Sanderson and Ashley Stenger. The younger group of Flier girls includes sophomores, Baylee Relf, Emily Rosheim, Shanaya Lunday and Erica Behrens. If you add freshman, Brooklyn Behrens and Hannah Williams, the Fliers have plenty of young talent coming through the pipeline.

But if they want to improve on their record from last season, they are going to need to be more consistent offensively. The Fliers need to improve on their perimeter game. FHS shot just 30% from behind the arc a year ago. But those are low percentage shots. The Fliers will need to take advantage of their free-throw opportunities. If Flandreau can improve on their 62% FT shooting, it should help them win the close contests.

“Offensive consistency will be a big key for us this season. We will have to improve our offensive performance in order to win ballgames,” said Head Coach Brian Relf.

A lot of that offensive output will be determined by the effort given on second chance opportunities. The Fliers only shot 37% last season so they will look for their posts to battle down low and get a lot of second chance points.

All the preseason speculation means nothing when it comes to in game performance. The Fliers put their hard work to the test last night in their first game. The results from the Flandreau and Chester game will be in next week’s paper
