The Flandreau Flier cross-country team took to the course twice last week in preparation for post season meets that start this week.
The Fliers used the meets not only for experienced runners to make any adjustments to strategy but also to rest some of them. Also, three new FPS runners took part in the varsity meets last week.
Flandreau’s first meet came on Monday when they traveled to Hartford for the Darrell Horacek Invitation hosted by West Central High School.
Flandreau had eight girls participate in the varsity race. The leader of the pack, Marilyn Allen, finished in 16th place with a time of 16:48. Allen has been Flandreau’s top finisher in all eight of her team’s meets this season. Caitlyn Drietz (18:18) took 41st position, while Quinn Orlick (19:33, 56th) and Ashley Stenger (19:51, 59th) also finished up their regular season. Kathy Parsley (19:08, 52nd), Haleigh Nicol (20:15, 63rd) and Baylee Relf (20:51, 69th) all competed in their first varsity meet of the year.
On the boy’s side, Guy Zephier continued his impressive season by taking seventh place in a time of 18:19, his third straight top ten finish. Anthony Julson finished second for Flandreau with a time of 19:04 in 23rd position. Dylan Erickson finished right behind him in 25th position with a time of 19:06. Michael Nelson ran in his second varsity race of the season finishing in 22:19 in 79th place.
Only a few runners took part in the season wrap up meet in Lennox. Allen paced the Fliers again, finishing in 16:09 to take 21st place. Drietz took 37th (16:55) while Stenger finished in 18:13 (60th). Parsley (17:42, 54th), Nicol (18:33, 67th) and Relf (18:30, 66th) all competed in their second consecutive varsity race.
Zephier was FPS’ top finisher in 10th place (17:29) with Erickson taking 16th (17:40) and Julson finishing in 65th (19:45).
The Fliers competed in the Lake Central Conference Meet in Volga on Monday, as well as the Big East Conference tournament tomorrow. The results from those meets will be in next week’s paper.
