Posted: Tuesday, Feb 2nd, 2010

Colman-Egan boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both faced off against Arlington for third place in last week’s Dakota Valley Conference Tournament, but only the girls’ squad was able to come out with a victory.

The girls were able to edge Arlington 69-67 in final round action in Elkton Jan. 28, but the boys lost a hard-fought 66-57 game to the Cardinals.

Standout senior guard Kylie Westover led the Hawks to victory against Arlington with a game-high 31 points as the Hawks defeated Arlington for third place. Westover also scored the 1,000th point of her Colman-Egan basketball career during the game.

Colman-Egan took a 3-point lead in the first quarter that led to a 36-30 advantage going into halftime, only to see the Cardinals come back and take the lead in the third quarter. But Colman-Egan regained the led shortly after Arlington took it and held on for the win.

The Hawks improved to 7-6 with the win. Adding to the Hawks’ scoring effort were Morgan May and Meggie Hauglid, who had 11 and 10 points, respectively; May added 12 rebounds.

Gina Fritz also had 12 boards and Hauglid had seven for the Hawks.

Allison Boeck had 16 points and Alecia Egeberg and Jacklyn Jencks had 14 points each with Jencks pulling down 11 rebounds for Arlington.

The Hawks had a 48-45 rebounding advantage and were accurate from the free throw line, shooting at a clip of 77 percent.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ game, Arlington outscored Colman-Egan 19-5 in the second quarter to take control of the Dakota Valley Conference third-place game. The Cardinals went on to defeat the C-E Hawks 66-57.

Trailing by 10 entering the second frame, Arlington went on a run that seized the momentum from the Hawks and turned it in the Cardinals' favor. Arlington went into the halftime break leading 31-27.

Kyle Entringer led all players with 23 points and Mitch Relf added 12 points and five boards as Colman-Egan fell to 6-6 with the loss.

Colman-Egan took fourth in the tournament with the loss, while Elkton-Lake Benton defeated Deubrook area 63-59 in overtime to win the DVC crown.

Lake Preston defeated Dell Rapids St. Mary in the seventh place game, and Estelline defeated Oldham-Ramona/Rutland for fifth.
