James L. “Jiggs” Rice, age 87 of Brookings, passed away Friday, October 4, 2013 at the United Living Center, Brookings.
James Louis Rice was born in Flandreau on May 13, 1926 to James Howard and Alice Mae (Gothier) Rice. He was educated in the Flandreau Public School system and graduated from SDS Agriculture School. He served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the A.M. 274 Pinnacle, a mine sweeper and also on the destroyer Cowil from which he was honorably discharged. He served in China, Japan, S. China Sea, Pearl Harbor, Okinawa and Quam. He married Beverly Ellefson at Flandreau on September 15, 1948 and they farmed near Ward, SD. Beverly passed away on March 9, 1971. James married Marilyn (Cook) Krulish on February 2, 1973 at Flandreau, SD. He worked for the SDSU Athletic Department from 1974 until 1993.
Jiggs served on the Ward Township Board, Ward School Board and the Draft Board. He loved animals and the land. He loved working in his repair shop where he repaired and refinished beautiful antiques for many family members and friends in the community. He was a member of First Reformed Church, Volga where he served the Lord with gladness and the Brookings American Legion Post #74.
James is survived his wife, Marilyn; 3 children, Michael (Jeani), Webster, SD, Jeffory (Lori), Brookings and Timothy (Robin), Volga; 3 stepchildren, Daniel (Lynda) Krulish, Lonsdale, MN, Jody, (Jack) Lundie, Lake Madison, SD and Mary Bakker, Sioux Falls; 19 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; 8 step-grandchildren; 7 great step-grandchildren; 1 brother, Leo (Cecelia) Rice, Flandreau and 1 sister, Mary Tubandt, Redfield, SD.
Celebration of Life will be 1:30 Saturday, October 12, 2013 at First Reformed Church, Volga with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Bruce, SD.
