Irene E.E. “Gusie” Friedrich, age 95 of Aurora, passed away Monday, August 12, 2013 at her home near Aurora under hospice care.
Irene Esther Emma was born August 28, 1917, along with her twin brother to Dora (Gruenhagen) and Julius Radetzki in Davenport, IA. She attended parochial schools through the 8th grade and graduated from Davenport High School in 1936. She and her family had lived in Aurora and White, SD for a short time between 1922 and 1929. She met Harry Friedrich at that time and they were united in marriage on August 20, 1939. They farmed with Harry’s parents and have always lived on the same farmstead.
Gusie worked hard on the farm, but also enjoyed the camaraderie of neighborhood trips to northern Minnesota, getting together to play cards (canasta and pinochle) and other get-togethers. She taught Sunday School and was active in Ladies Aid. She was also active in the League of Woman Voters and the Democratic Party serving as Precinct Woman, State Central Committee Woman and Brookings County Chairwoman. She loved her yard and garden and enjoyed mowing on her riding mower and helped with tending to the garden and beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed bowling. Gusie was always a great role model, taking time for others and doing all the considerate things she did, whether that was lending a helping hand, sympathetic ear, and a ready smile and disposition.
She is survived by her children: Harriet “Freddie” Boyd of Flandreau, Peggy (Charles) McCann of Lincoln, NE and Chuck (Linda) Friedrich of Aurora; five grandchildren: Tami (Rob) Meurer, Marse (Ken) Carpenter, Marissa (Jason) Kivett, Dawn (Joe) Hardin and Corey (Michelle) Friedrich; 11 great grandchildren: Kelsey, Hailey, Connor, Cayley, Trent, Alex, Blaine, Emma, Lincoln, Cannon and Coy; and one sister-in-law: Elaine Waples of Aurora.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 70 years Harry, and her three brothers, twin Theodore, Elmer and Art.
Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Friday, August 16, 2013 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings, with a Prayer Service beginning at 6:45 pm.
