Vincent T. “Smitty” Smith, age 82 of Rapid City, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at the Rapid City Regional Hospice House.
Vincent was born on June 11, 1931 in Dell Rapids, SD to Oscar and Hazel (Reynolds) Smith. He graduated from Flandreau High School in 1949 and later enlisted in the SD Army National Guard where he served for 39 years, retiring in 1986 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. Vincent was united in marriage to Carol Crippen on December 12, 1975 in Rapid City. Vincent was a “cowboy horseman” and had been active in the Buckaroos and Boots & Saddles Club. He enjoyed fishing, especially on the Missouri River for Walleyes, elk and deer hunting, traveling and playing golf. He was a snowbird in Lake Havasu City, AZ for 15 years and enjoyed his time with his “coffee buddies” at the Parkway Restaurant and later the Campbell Street Cafe. He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Club, Elks, and Canyon Lake Senior Center.
He is survived by his wife: Carol Smith of Rapid City; two daughters: Roxan (Mike) Smith of Pine Haven, WY and Shelley (Scott) Peterson of Rapid City; two sons: Tom Smith and Brad (Julie) Smith, both of Rapid City; eight grandchildren: Heather, Rusty, Kim, Cody, Kaitlyn, Erich, Jenna and Kelsey; eight great grandchildren; and his very special Yorkshire Terrier lap dog “Tiki”.
A memorial service was held June 24 at Kirk Funeral Home with Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Inurnment with military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
